It's that sight you want to ignore, a messy cabinet, small closet or drawer!
Today is the day.
Today is the day that one will get cleaned out.
And I mean CLEAN.
Choose one. . . one SMALL space filled with random things, odds and ends, stuffed away behind a door. It could be the junk drawer in your kitchen, your glove compartment, your bedside table, and the list of ideas goes on. . .
Make it fun by turning on some of your favorite music! As my friend Lilian likes to say, "make 2 piles. One is the "give away" and the other is the "throw away".
Before we get started on tackling this drawer, let's set a realistic end-time as to how long you will give yourself to make this happen (20 or 30 minutes, hopefully minimally interrupted), and please, people, start small. I said a drawer or cabinet, not the garage :-).
I think this is important to do, in order to receive that which is awaiting us, we need to make space for it.
Rubber gloves are not required. Let's get started.
Be realistic. Start with a small project. Take all the contents out, and I mean, ALL of the contents. I would even go so far as to wipe down or vaccum the new empty space!
Then remember, "give away" or "throw away" and OK, OK, you can reserve a small pile for things to keep. But make sure that you really need them.
Put things back in their home if this particular drawer/closet is not their real home. If the pens don't work, throw them away. If it's expired, that means its new home is the trashcan.
Instant gratification. As soon as you are done with your little project, reward yourself! Enjoying a bowl of berries is a good thing, and so is turning up the music and dancing around your living room.
Next time you feel down, just open the door to your completed project and allow yourself to marvel at your project well-done, as it is a step in the right direction. . .

It wasn't on Saturday, but Sunday - I cleaned out an entire apartment and moved it into a house with the help of some friends. It really was a great feeling. Now to get it all situated and enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteyeh, yeh. .. my whole life is a junk drawer.
ReplyDeleteit is hard for me to decide. everything is important. each article, most gadgets, every drawing or photo...
everything is sentimental, or educational, or fun. or has potential,.... or needs to be shared with someone else...stress!
therefore, I save too much. my Things dont have a "home"...so I Spend a lot of
time looking for misplaced things! Stress! Wasted time!
but i DO get gratification when my closet is clean and tidy, when i've cleaned out my junk drawer...(of course, they dont STAY orderly very long!) you gave some great advice!!
did you get your ideas from flylady (.net or com, I forget. She wrote book "Sink Reflections" CHECK OUT THAT WEBSITE! SO fun
to clean your house by zones...she makes it
easier for us disorganized ones....and can even help the organized relax a little.
There are two kinds of people in the world.
organized
unorganized
you will probably belong to one or the other.
very few are in the middle.
now, i have an idea for a topic/post.....from Dr Oz show. about stress and our DNA. stress
can cause problems on cellular level....(and
a messy house stresses me out !) he used shoelaces to demonstrate what happens to us.
more on that later.
